Instead of an Entry Fee, Add Countries to the Visa Waiver Program!

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

The US Senate needs to learn that the way to attract more overseas tourists to the US is NOT to charge a new $10 fee. Incredibly, that’s the gist of the new Travel Promotion Act, introduced on Tuesday by Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-ND). Obviously this guy from North Dakota knows nothing about what makes foreigners want to visit us here.

The bill would create a non-profit corporation ‘to better communicate U.S. entry policies to international travelers and promote leisure, business and scholarly travel to the US.’  The act would also create an office of travel promotion with the Dept of Commerce.

But after that it gets ugly. The Dept of Homeland Security would collect a $10 fee from foreign travelers to pay for the whole thing.  Gadling, a cheeky blog published by AOL, has this suggestion:

Here’s what the US government can really do to encourage foreign visitors: Add more countries to the Visa Waiver Program. Stop requiring every visitor to the US (except those from the 35 “low-risk” countries already in the program) to go through the hassle, expense, and impossibly long wait that obtaining a visa inevitably entails.

And oh yeah, if a person is lucky enough to actually obtain a traveler’s visa, let’s stop treating them like criminals before they even get in the door.

JFK and LGA deal with overpopulation of geese

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Five months ago the country applauded Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger who landed his plane in the Hudson River in New York City after hitting a flock of geese. Both John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia airports have decided to be proactive to lessen their goose population.

Approximately 2,000 geese will be removed and then euthanized to benefit airport safety. JFK and LGA are both taking the hazard of flying birds very seriously. This time of year was chosen to deal with the problem as it is molting season for geese and they are unable to fly away.

The “Miracle on the Hudson” impressed and amazed us all as Capt. “Sully” gently landed his plane in the cold waters of the Hudson. We all remember the passengers standing on the wings waiting to be rescued before the plane sank. While some may still have trouble thinking that geese or birds could be a serious problem – one only has to point to this recent example to understand just how serious an issue they can be.

When traveling from JFK or LGA remember to make your traveling easier and oh so convenient with off airport parking. AirportParkingReservations.com has off airport parking facilities to serve you for both locations:

SmartPark JFK

For LGA:
