One thing that most of us have in common when an airplane finally reaches its destination. It’s the dreaded “Post-Flight Hunching” where we all stand there awkwardly hunched over beneath the overhead waiting for the aisles to clear.

Scott McCarthy of the WSJ included a link in his Twitter feed that took me to an article about the new Boeing 737, the flagship model of Southwest and many other airline’s fleets, which is being redesigned. The interior is called The Boeing Sky Interior and includes much more headroom and bins that gently angle to avoid the dreaded hunch. The new model has bins that pivot up which will mean you can actually stand up when you’re in the inside seats underneath the bins. Well, sort of. There will still be a challenge if you’re over six feet.

Other improvements of the newly redesigned plane include color LED lighting in the ceiling to enhance a sense of spaciousness, speakers for every seat and brighter colors and decor throughout.

I can’t wait to fly on a new 737 myself and test this out, now what I want to know is why does it take so damn long for the doors to open when I land at an airport anyway?

The Green Plane is Southwest’s newest initiative in a company-wide effort to save money and fuel.

OUr friend Johnny Jet flies about 150,000 miles a year and takes fastidious notes of every mile in the air. He recently wrote about Southwest Airlines media day where they unveiled a new plane that will clean up the way airlines do business.

From the nose to the tail, this 737, the airlines only model, will be much greener.It starts with the little things: they’ve replaced those awful styrofoam cups with eco-friendly paper ones with built-in sleeves to keep the cup from burning passenger’s hands..

The plane is equipped with NextGen satellite-based navigation, which means flying more direct routes and emitting less CO2.

The plane’s carpet is made of recycled materials, they have lighter fake-leather seats which save 2 pounds per seat.They even use smaller lifejackets to save weight.

They use Pratt and Whitney’s eco wash system which removes grime from the engines in an environmentally safe way that saves fuel and makes the engines last longer.

In other news, the conpany’s CEO told him flat-out that Southwest won’t be charging for bags this year, or even for a second bag. Let’s keep our fingers crossed on that.

Air travel is 100 years old this month. Who do we have to thank for this? Count von Zeppelin, who couldn’t sell enough of his zeppelin airships to the military, so he decided to use them for passenger travel. It all started in 1909, and between that year and 1914, more than 34,000 passengers sailed the friendly skies aboard zeppelins, according to historian Ron Davies of the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum.

The zepplins were luxury crafts in the sky, floating along at a gentle speed and offering gourmet food like frog’s legs and champagne, and they flew only in good weather at low altitudes, much to the amazement of people down below. The ships had rigid sides, unlike today’s blimps, and were ten times as big as blimps.

Though most Americans of a certain age remember the Hindenberg disaster in Lakehurst NJ in 1939, before the count began taking passengers he had his own series of crashes and cash crunches, like today’s airlines. In those early days, the count was counting on using the zeppelins to promote the ships, and get more military orders. The top speed for the Schwaben, or Zeppelin LZ 10, was 44 miles an hour. There were no scheduled flights, weather restrictions and having to land on a tether made that impossible.

After the zeppelins, it wasn’t until 1914 that an airboat airplane was scheduled, and that was between Tampa and St. Petersburg Florida. The roundtrip cost $10.

Travel does make some people feel romantic. Air New Zealand this month offered a matchmaking flight between LA and Auckland, including a pre-flight party, in-flight hijinks and a ticket to a post flight gala where 150 single Kiwis will be in attendance.

For people who’ve given Match.com and EHarmony a try, this is a new way to find their mates.

Why do airlines offer this kind of thing? The Airline’s marketing manager, Kathryn Gregory, said the matchmaking flight fits with the airline’s goal of ‘putting the fun back in flying.’ But this isn’t the first time an airline has tried to become a dating game in the sky. SkyEurope, a now defunct low-cost airline in central Europe, experimented with speed-dating flights in 2007.

Woman sat in special reserved seats and have five-minute chats with males who rotated through the different seats meeting the women. Air New Zealand didn’t go this far, they just encouraged people to mix and mingle.

Themed flights like this will be more and more available. Quantas offered a ‘pink flight’ where a gay-friendly theme prevailed, and it was a big marketing success.
