Major Airports Nearing Capacity

Monday, July 11th, 2011

Newark Liberty, LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy International Airports are some of the busiest in the United States. With a combined capacity of 110 million passengers between them, in 2010 they came close to reaching this with a total of 103 million travellers passing through the airports.

With demand for the airports likely to rise – it’s expected to reach 130 million by 2029 – the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is set to study ways the airports could extend their capacity in order to meet the upcoming challenges. If changes aren’t made to extend the capacity of the airports, it is thought that the region could lose billions of dollars as passengers are forced to fly elsewhere.

Any changes that are made to extend capacity are likely to cost billions of dollars and cause disruption at the airports until the alterations (such as a new runway and terminal relocations at Newark Liberty International Airport) are complete. As demand grows, another area that is likely to be affected is airport parking, which is already in demand but could soon become overcrowded as passenger numbers continue to rise.

One option for passengers flying through these airports is to make use of the extensive range of off-site parking lots that serve the airports. JFK Airport, Newark Liberty Airport and LaGuardia Airport are all served by multiple off-airport parking options that provide parking alternatives for customers unable to find airport parking or simply looking for a different parking solution. Shuttle buses are included to take passengers to their final destination.

Disruption At JFK

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

A man who used a stolen ID card and old boarding passes featuring names not his own in order to illegally board at flight at JFK airport was arrested at LAX this week. The man is said to be Nigerian-born and he used up to 10 different boarding passes in order to get through the heavy security in place at the airport and make his way onto a flight.

He apparently used the same method to fly to Los Angeles International Airport, where he was arrested and accused of being a stowaway on a plane. He was trying to board a plane to Atlanta from LAX when the arrest took place.

It wasn’t the only disruption at New York’s John F Kennedy Airport this week, either. On a slightly lighter not – on the morning of Wednesday 29th June, dozens of flights were delayed by 150 terrapin turtles in search of beach.

It might sound like something out of a comedy show, but planes were forced to divert to alternative runways as the turtles crawled across the tarmac. The animals were looking for somewhere to lay their eggs and evidently had become confused in their search for a suitable place. JFK Airport staff had to then make their way onto the tarmac to rescue the turtles and transport them across the airport facility. As a result, flights were delayed by an average of up to 30 minutes.

Following the above incidents, flights from JFK Airport are said to be operating normally once more.

JFK and LGA deal with overpopulation of geese

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Five months ago the country applauded Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger who landed his plane in the Hudson River in New York City after hitting a flock of geese. Both John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia airports have decided to be proactive to lessen their goose population.

Approximately 2,000 geese will be removed and then euthanized to benefit airport safety. JFK and LGA are both taking the hazard of flying birds very seriously. This time of year was chosen to deal with the problem as it is molting season for geese and they are unable to fly away.

The “Miracle on the Hudson” impressed and amazed us all as Capt. “Sully” gently landed his plane in the cold waters of the Hudson. We all remember the passengers standing on the wings waiting to be rescued before the plane sank. While some may still have trouble thinking that geese or birds could be a serious problem – one only has to point to this recent example to understand just how serious an issue they can be.

When traveling from JFK or LGA remember to make your traveling easier and oh so convenient with off airport parking. AirportParkingReservations.com has off airport parking facilities to serve you for both locations:
